Wikipedia - 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification (OFC)
The Oceanian section of the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification acted as qualifiers for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, to be held in Russia, for national teams which are members of the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC). A total of 0.5 slots (i.e. 1 inter-confederation play-off slot) in the final tournament was available for OFC teams.
The 2016 edition of the OFC Nations Cup once again doubled as the second round of the OFC qualifying competition for the 2018 FIFA World Cup (similar to the 2012 OFC Nations Cup and the OFC qualifying competition for the 2014 FIFA World Cup). Unlike in 2012, however, the team that won the qualifying competition and advanced to the intercontinental play-off, New Zealand, was the same team that also won the OFC Nations Cup and represented the OFC at the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup.
Oseanias VM-kvalifisering er en fotballturnering organisert av Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) for å avgjøre hvilket lag som kvalifiserer seg til FIFA-verdensmesterskapet.
**Format**
Turneringen består av fire runder:
* **Runde 1:** 12 lag delt inn i tre grupper med fire lag hver. Vinneren av hver gruppe går videre til runde 2.
* **Runde 2:** Tre vinnerlag fra runde 1 og det best rangerte laget fra OFC i FIFAs verdensranking går videre. Disse fire lagene spiller i en round robin, og de to beste lagene går videre til runde 3.
* **Runde 3:** De to vinnerne fra runde 2 spiller en to-kampers finale. Vinneren av finalen kvalifiserer seg til VM.
* **Interkontinentalt playoff:** Hvis laget som vinner runde 3 ikke er rangert blant de 5 beste i OFC, må de spille et interkontinentalt playoff mot et lag fra en annen konføderasjon for å kvalifisere seg til VM.
**Historie**
Oseanias VM-kvalifisering har blitt arrangert siden 1982. New Zealand har vunnet flest titler, med 8 kvalifiseringer. Andre nasjoner som har kvalifisert seg til VM inkluderer Australia, Tahiti og Papua Ny-Guinea.
**Norske forbindelser**
Norge har deltatt i Oseanias VM-kvalifisering én gang, i 2006, som en gjestedeltaker på grunn av avlyste kamper i Europa. Norge vant kvalifiseringen og deltok i VM i Tyskland det året.
